WiseLayer™ Storage Guide
WiseLayer™ Rolls being loaded into a container, ready for shipping around the world.
Wool can look like it’s “sweating” in the bag, especially in hot weather. Don’t worry. This guide explains what’s happening (science, not spoilage) and gives you clear, quick rules for storing Wisewool™ WiseLayer™ rolls so they stay pristine, dry to the touch and ready to install. Follow the cool-shade-ventilate mantra and use our supervisor checklist to keep every warehouse on spec, even in summer.
Why wool may “sweat” and why it is not a concern
Wool is naturally hygroscopic. It absorbs and releases moisture vapour depending on temperature and humidity.
In hot climates, a sealed plastic wrap traps that vapour. When the roll heats up, the vapour condenses on the inside of the plastic and looks like “sweat”.
This is normal, reversible and not harmful to the fibre.
Once the roll cools and has access to air, the wool reabsorbs the moisture and returns to equilibrium.
While sweating does not damage the wool, it is best avoided by following the simple storage rules below.
WiseLayer™ vac-packed roll
Note:
A Wisewool™ WiseLayer™ roll is delivered securely wrapped in two sleeves/ layers of plastic.
The inner sleeve provides general protection, while the outer sleeve is a vacuum pack that ensures consistent, compact packaging for efficient transport. If rolls are stored in a cool, climate-controlled environment, they can remain in their original packaging.
In warm or hot conditions, it is recommended to remove the outer plastic sleeve (picture 3) and store in the inner loose plastic sleeve (picture 2) with the ends of the plastic open to allow air flow and always in a shaded area.
Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet, thanks to its hygroscopic, breathable fibre structure.
Quick Rules for All Warehouses
Keep wool cool
Keep rolls away from direct sun, hot walls, metal roofs or warm loading docks.
Avoid any area that regularly exceeds 30 degrees Celsius.
Never store sealed rolls in the sun
Do not leave wrapped rolls outside on hot days in direct sunlight.
Do not leave rolls inside vehicles or containers that have been heating in sunlight.
Always allow ventilation
When rolls arrive in plastic, open at least one end of the bag during storage.
This lets the wool breathe and prevents trapped vapour.
If sweating is visible, open both ends to allow airflow through the centre.
Provide airflow around stored rolls
Leave space between rolls and walls.
Allow gentle cross ventilation in the storage room.
Avoid stacking rolls tightly against ceilings or corners.
What To Do If Wool Is Already Sweating
Move to a cool, shaded area immediately
Take the roll out of direct heat.
Keep it in shade, not direct sun.
Open the packaging to let moisture escape
Cut or open the end of the plastic.
If heavy condensation is present, open both ends to allow for air flow
Allow the roll to settle
Leave the roll ventilated for 24 to 48 hours.
As it cools the moisture will reabsorb into the fibre naturally.
No special treatment is needed.
